The City of Cannon Beach is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Utility Worker. This position is assigned to the Parks division of Public Works, under the lead of the Public Works Director, and may support other Public Works teams as resource needs dictate. Work hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with occasional on-call/standby duties weekends and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or a GED, possession of a valid driver’s license, a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the field of parks or landscape maintenance. Experience and the ability to work with hand and power tools, lawn mowers, riding mowers, hedgers, chainsaws, dump trucks, light trucks, tractors, forklifts, and other related power tools is required. Strenuous physical work is required which may involve lifting heavy objects, bending, twisting, working usually out of doors in conditions that may be wet and cold or otherwise unpleasant; occasional call out after regular working hours.

  • Understanding and working knowledge of safety practices and principles related to landscape maintenance and handling gardening chemicals, vehicles, and equipment;
  • Working knowledge and experience with turf, plant, tree, and shrub identification and care including pruning and removal;
  • Working knowledge of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and diseases/insects affecting trees;
  • Working knowledge of sprinkler and irrigation systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair;
  • Working knowledge of planning, estimating, and scheduling maintenance, materials, repairs, or replacements;
  • Working knowledge and experience with the use of gardening chemicals;
  • Experience with policy and regulation compliance;
  • Experience in effective reception, customer service practices, and internal and external communication;
  • Working knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and usage.

Duties include: Planning and performing the daily, weekly, and monthly duties associated with the proper appearance and appropriate maintenance, care and construction of landscaped property owned by the City, including parks, parking lots, restrooms, buildings or facilities and beach access rights-of-way (ROW) through careful planning and inventory management within approved budget levels.

Maintenance duties include: mowing grass, trimming trees and hedges in the City ROW by planning with the City’s arborist, maintaining irrigation and drainage systems, planting, fertilizing, mulching, and weeding beds, maintaining hand dryers, lighting, and ventilation in public restrooms, handling minimal plumbing or faucet issues in the public restrooms that do not require a certified plumber, removing and disposing of litter from public property. The Utility Worker is responsible for assisting with inquiries from the public, recommending a budget for annual maintenance, equipment, and labor costs, and attending monthly Parks Committee meetings to provide updates to committee and community members on behalf of Public Works.

Desired Qualifications/Licenses/Experience:

  • Previous experience with a municipality, Public Works department, or closely-related field;
  • Additional Public Works experience beyond Parks, e.g. water, wastewater, and roads;
  • Possess a CDL operating license;
  • Certified Arborist, or the ability to pursue certification within one year of hire, or with experience or background in arboriculture or horticulture;
  • Master Gardener certification;
  • Bilingual abilities.

Excellent benefit package. Salary range, depending on experience:
Utility Worker I – $3,449 to $4,402 per month, or $19.90 to $25.40 per hour
Utility Worker II – $4,005 to $5,111 per month, or $23.11 to $29.49 per hour
