Description: HRAP Rocky Shore Interpreters educate the public about intertidal and seabird ecology, support school field trip programs, promote stewardship, redirect visitors engaging in prohibited activities, set-up and break down HRAP’s mobile education unit, collect scientific data, maintain equipment, rescue and transport of injured birds, and conduct miscellaneous office, administrative, and education duties including but not limited to data entry, data analysis, videography, lectures, assist in grant writing, curriculum development, and website and social media maintenance.
About HRAP: The Haystack Rock Awareness Program is a stewardship and environmental education program whose mission is to protect, through education, the intertidal and bird ecology of the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. Since its modest beginnings in 1985, HRAP has educated and inspired over nine hundred thousand adults and children to learn about the natural resources at Haystack Rock and in other places on our Earth. The Friends of Haystack Rock work closely with HRAP, providing guidance and financial support.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Will report to the HRAP Director.
- Set up and break down beach programs, requiring driving the truck including on the beach, walking long distances, and often carrying items weighing more than 45lbs in various weather conditions.
- Train and mentor volunteers.
- Beach program schedule varies daily around low tide; therefore, applicants must be willing to work early mornings, mid-days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Work schedules are coordinated at least one month in advance. HRAP’s team includes 1 full-time Director, 1 part-time Volunteer and Education Coordinator, 1 part-time Communications Coordinator, up to 18 part-time seasonal staff, and up to 100 volunteers.
- HRAP Season runs March through October 2022
- Interact with the public, communicating, as an educator, various elements of the ecosystem at Haystack Rock.
- Clean, maintain and repair equipment such as the truck, scopes, binoculars, signs, and other program items.
- Think quickly and act accordingly when a hazardous situation presents itself (such as a quickly moving, incoming tide).
- Attend monthly staff meetings and other trainings.
- Collect data and information for strategic use.
- Enter data logs daily.
- Utilize technology to record data and take daily readings.
- Assist in citizen science and other ongoing research efforts
- Must be driven by a strong work ethic to produce quality work on a short timeline.
- Serve as an ambassador of the mission of HRAP and City of Cannon Beach, in public interaction, while working.
Qualifications: High School graduate, valid driver’s license, good communication skills, exercise of judgment, initiative, and teamwork. Training will be provided in the areas of intertidal and seabird identification and ecology, program set-up and break-down, data collection, temporary species collection, general communication skills, beach driving, and equipment maintenance. Relevant experience in education, interpreting, environmental science, oceanography, ecology, and other related biology fields preferred.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Must have proficiency in MS Office Applications, desktop publishing, database, and spreadsheet software. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required. Must have the ability to effectively present information to diverse groups. The ability to work independently or with others to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision is essential. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift and hold at least 50 lbs., and are willing to work in adverse weather conditions. Skills and knowledge in marketing principles, grant writing, and curriculum development is preferred. Experience in education, interpreting, environmental science, oceanography, ecology, and other related biology fields preferred, but not required. Preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish and English.
Compensation: $15-22/hour; depending upon education and experience. Position is part-time (10- 29 hrs./ week), seasonal/temporary (February – October 2022), and not eligible for benefits.
