The City of Cannon Beach seeks qualified applicants for Junior Rocky Shore Interpreter positions for the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP). These seasonal, part-time positions run February through October, with flexible start and end dates, work alongside Rocky Shore Interpreters and Volunteers. Junior Rocky Shore Interpreters will work under the supervision of the HRAP Director.

Duties: Junior Rocky Shore Interpreters educate the public about intertidal and seabird ecology during low tide hours at Haystack Rock; promote natural resource conservation and stewardship; assist program volunteers; redirect visitors engaging in prohibited activities; set-up and break down HRAP’s education units; collect accurate data; participate in program events and maintain equipment off the beach. Beach schedule varies daily around low tide; therefore, applicants must be willing to work early mornings, middays, evenings, and weekends. Work hours will not interfere with school hours during the school year. Work schedules are coordinated one month in advance. HRAP’s team includes one full-time Director, one part-time Volunteer and Education Coordinator, one part-time Communications Coordinator, 8-14 part-time seasonal Interpreters, and 80-100 community volunteers.

Requirements: Must be between 16-18 years of age, currently enrolled in high school, have strong work-ethic, good interpersonal communication skills, exercise of judgment, initiative, attention to detail, and teamwork. Training will be provided in the areas of intertidal and seabird identification, program set-up and break-down, data collection, temporary species collection, and equipment maintenance. Relevant knowledge and/or experience preferred, but not required.

Compensation: $15-19/hour; depending upon education and experience. Position is part-time, students are limited to evenings or weekends only during the school year (5-20 hrs./week), seasonal/temporary (February 2024 – October 2024), and not eligible for benefits.

Student employees who are Seniors at Seaside High School and work at least 50-hours for HRAP over a 12-24 month period, maintain a GPA of 3.0, plan to pursue a degree in environmental, marine science, or ornithological studies, and will or are attending a community college or 4 year university or college may be eligible to apply for a $2,500 scholarship from the Friends of Haystack Rock (FOHR), scholarship may be eligible for renewal up to three times (four years).
