Cannon Beach is home to beautiful wildlife, including elk that often move through neighborhoods, parks, streets, and visitor areas. The City of Cannon Beach is taking a proactive approach to help residents and visitors understand how to safely live alongside elk and prevent dangerous close interactions.
This initiative focuses on public safety, wildlife protection, and ongoing education to help prevent serious incidents before they happen.
- Stay at least 100 feet away
- Do not approach elk for photos
- Never feed elk
- Keep dogs leashed
- Stay alert, especially at dawn and dusk
- Use your camera zoom instead of stepping closer
Remember: Too Close is Too Late.
Elk are wild animals. Even when they appear calm, they can become unpredictable if people get too close, try to feed them, approach them for photos, or allow dogs near them.
The goal is simple:
Protect people. Protect wildlife. Preserve what makes Cannon Beach special.
